Rob is currently serving as Elite Rugby Director of the Rugby Football Union. Appointed in September 2006 he is responsible for overseeing the development of all England teams. When rugby turned professional in 1995 Rob was still playing for Wasps RFC, however, in September 1995 he was approached by the then Chairman of Newcastle Rugby Football Club, Sir John Hall to join the club. Rob agreed terms and joined the club as Director of Rugby. In March 1999 the club was taken over by David Thompson, a local businessman and rugby enthusiast and re-named Newcastle Falcons. Rob continued to play fly-half for Newcastle Falcons until September 1999 when a recurring shoulder injury forced his retirement. Rob served as full-time Director of Rugby at Newcastle Falcons for 11 years, assisted by Andrew Blades, First XV Forwards Coach and Steve Black, Fitness and Conditioning Coach working together to develop a keen, young squad of players. Rob assisted John Parkinson, CEO in the planning application for the redevelopment of the Kingston Park stadium. Work commenced on the stadium in May 2002 and continued during the first half of the season 2002-2003. The new 4,000-seater West Stand was unveiled on 1st February 2003 (which incidentally boasts the longest bar in the UK!). Since then Newcastle Falcons have enjoyed a tremendous increase in the crowds at Kingston Park as well as some great home victories against Premiership giants such as Leicester and Northampton. Rob feels that firm foundations have been laid for a very successful future at Kingston Park.
